In old-age, Saint-Saens developed a reputation as a surly and irascible character, yet throughout his life, as Donald Macleod finds out, he developed close friendships with a number of composers, including Liszt, Bizet and Faure. He championed the works of a good many more (both dead and alive) who were often unfashionable or little known.
