In 19th century Paris, the Soiree Musicale, or musical evening, was a fixture of the social calendar. Any self-respecting host or hostess, even if they had only a passing interest in music, would regularly throw such events. In today's programme, Donald Macleod explores this salon world - one which the gifted and gregarious Saint-Saens inhabited with ease.

Each concert will also feature a specially commissioned poem by Jo Shapcott in which she gives her personal response to the music and the wider themes of conflict and resolution.
