Christine Schäfer's mesmerising portrayal of Lulu, Berg's seductive and enigmatic heroine, is still remembered from the 1996 Proms season. She revisits the character in Berg's Lulu Suite. Then in complete contrast, in the second part of the concert, she sings the magical and innocent vision of heaven which ends Mahler's most classical symphony, his Symphony No 4.
