Prom 42 pt.1
Monday 16 August 2004 19:30-20:25 (Radio 3)
Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London.
Valery Gergiev, a national hero in his native land, brings soloists from the Kirov Opera to his first Prom with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The Witches Sabbath in Act 3 of Rimsky-Korsakov's exotic opera-ballet also inspired Musorgsky's dramatically charged tone poem. Both composers had a great influence on the young Stravinsky, whose immortal hymn to spring caused a riot during its first performance.
Presented by Tommy Pearson.
Continues after Twenty Minutes.
Programme notes, composer and artist profiles and "now playing" information for each main evening Prom are available on LiveText via Dab radio and Freeview.
