 Susan Sharpe One of Sue's first gramophone records was Sparky's Magic Piano; another, Spike Jones' version of the Nutcracker, complete with the City Slickers. She played them so often on her wind-up gramophone she wore them out! But in spite of many years learning the piano, her fantasies of being a concert pianist came to nothing. Sue studied German at London University but, after a brief spell in the BBC German Service, left to bring up her family. Hardly a career break really! Then 12 years later she took a course in radio journalism and worked as a freelance newsreader and continuity announcer on the World Service. A job in the Radio 3 presentation department came her way soon after and for the past 16 years she's been able to indulge and share her love of music in one of the best jobs around presenting 'live' concerts and Proms, talking to musicians, watching them rehearse. For 11 years, she presented Radio 3's listeners' request programme, Midweek Choice, and for 18 months was the voice of the afternoon on 3. In 1998 she was named Radio Broadcaster of the Year by the Broadcasting Press Guild for her presentation on Radio 3. She's always had a special interest in words and music - particularly German poetry - and counts among her favourite composers Schubert, Wolf and Janacek. And anything theatrical grabs her - from music hall to grand opera. Freelance again now, she's currently one of the voices of Through the Night on Radio 3. You'll catch her sometimes on the World Service and occasionally on Radio 4, or leading opera enthusiasts to Vienna, Prague and other European cities. |
