Anthony Burton grew up in North Hertfordshire, playing the oboe in many orchestras (including the Hertfordshire Chamber Orchestra, conducted by the young Andrew Davis).
After reading music at Trinity College, Cambridge, he was lucky enough to land an arts administration job at Dartmouth College in New England (where he also conducted The Mikado). On returning to Britain, he became music officer of North West Arts in Manchester.

But a regular spot on WDCR at Dartmouth had given him a taste for radio, and in 1974 he joined the staff of BBC Radio 3. He spent 15 years there: initially as a producer of studio programmes ranging from medieval to contemporary music; later, as chief assistant to the controller, music, with special responsibility for the BBC Singers.

After leaving the BBC staff, he soon found himself back there as a presenter. His Radio 3 credits have included Mainly for Pleasure and In Tune for several years, seven seasons of Record Review, The Year, EBU special days including the annual Christmas programmes, many documentaries and numerous concert relays.

On BBC World Service, he presented the 390-part series The Story of Western Music, and regularly presents Music Review. Tony is also a record producer, the editor of the forthcoming Associated Board series of Performers' Guides, a record reviewer for BBC Music Magazine, and the author of literally thousands of programme notes, and a history of the BBC Singers. He lives in North London with his flute-playing wife and bassoon playing daughter, and two non-musical cats.
