Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra

Part Three

Thursday 7 July 2005 19:30-20:20 (Radio 3)

When Bach visited Frederick the Great in Potsdam in 1747 he entertained him by improvising a six-part fugue on a theme the King himself had written. Over the next two months the royal theme became the basis of the Musical Offering, a collection of pieces demonstrating the full power of Bach's skill in canon and fugue writing.

Recorded music replaces the planned live broadcast of this concert.
The programme continues after Twenty Minutes.
