Thursday 20 October 2005 20:40-21:40 (Radio 3)

Two dark and dramatic symphonic poems from Russia complete the concert given by the Halle Orchestra and Mark Elder live from the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.

Rachmaninov's The Isle of the Dead is inspired by a painting by Bocklin. Tchaikovsky dates his inspiration from the episode in Dante's Inferno where the souls of the two lovers Francesca and Paolo are swept up in a tempest and condemned to eternal damnation.

Introduced by Louise Fryer.

Duration:

1 hour

Playlist:

Rachmaninov: The Isle of the Dead Op 29
Tchaikovsky: Francesca da Rimini, Op 32
