Ferneyhough's Shadowtime

12 November 2005

Saturday 12 November 2005 18:30-21:00 (Radio 3)

Brian Ferneyhough's first opera recorded on its only visit to the UK at English National Opera. Dispensing with conventional action and characters, the work unfolds in a sequence of seven scenes, beginning with the suicide of the German philosopher Walter Benjamin. His writings on time, history and representation are woven into Charles Bernstein's dream-like libretto, to form a modern equivalent of the early 'intermedi'.

Preceded by a debate on the ideas behind Shadowtime, as Stephanie Hughes is joined by Ivan Hewett, with contributions from Nicolas Hodges and the composer himself. The opera itself begins at 6.50pm.

Duration:

2 hours 30 minutes

Playlist:

Nicolas Hodges (piano/speaker)
Mats Scheidegger (guitar)
Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart
Nieuw Ensemble
Jurjen Hempel (conductor)
