Evangelical Christianity in the USA

Monday 29 May 2006 21:30-22:15 (Radio 3)

Philip Dodd goes to Middle America to meet those battling for the heart of Evangelical Christianity. He talks to those who believe that The Rapture - the Biblical prophesy that heralds the end of the world - is brought ever closer by the conflict in Iraq and tracks their attempts to influence foreign policy in the Middle East. But Philip also talks to those who are seeking to reposition Evangelicism as a more Earth-bound religion that cares as much about environmentalism as abortion, homosexuality and Armageddon.

45 minutes

On Night Waves tonight as part of The Return of Faith week, Philip Dodd travels to the heart of America to examine the state of Evangelical Christianity and to talk to those battling for its soul.

The future of Evangelicalism is in many ways America's future. Evangelicals constitute a quarter of the population of America, and the movement is growing. Their leader has a conference call with George Bush every Monday.

But are they really just the Republican party at prayer?

Recorded in the week that South Dakota became the first to ban abortion even in cases of rape and incest, Philip examines how much opposition to abortion and homosexuality is really what defines the movement's politics and culture.

He talks to the President of the National Association of Evangelicals which has just published a report supporting racial justice and environmentalism. Is this a genuine broadening of their agenda in response to a new social and political reality...Or is it just good PR?

Join Philip Dodd for a special edition of Night Waves tonight at 9.30 here on BBC Radio 3.
