Paddy Ashdown

In a special extended interview, Philip Dodd talks to Paddy Ashdown, the former Leader of the Liberal Democrats - and until recently the United Nations High Representative in Bosnia.

On the publication of his new book, Swords and Ploughshares: Bringing Peace to the Twenty-First Century, Ashdown talks about his time in the Balkans, working to to reconstruct Bosnia from the rubble of war - and the wider lessons he believes can be learned from his experience.

He discusses why he is drawn to leadership - of the Liberal Democrats and as a Captain in the Army. But has he always been an outsider - as an Ulsterman at an English public school and a Briton running a foreign country?
