On Friday 24 th February at 10.15 pm, Mixing It on Radio 3 has a very special edition featuring a unique collaboration between the BBC Concert Orchestra and rising stars of the East London grime scene, which is a mixture of UK garage, drum'n'bass and hip-hop. The idea came from live music producers Serious and Bigga Fish, in partnership with the BBC, who have commissioned a series of pieces, arranged for the occasion by producer DaVinChe and Mercury-nominated jazz musician and producer Jason Yarde. The soloists include MCs Bruza, Tor, Pase, Purple, beatboxer Faith SFX, and vocalist Terri Walker. The BBC Concert Orchestra is conducted by Charles Hazlewood and joins forces with Jason Yarde (saxophones), DaVinChe (keyboards), Matthew Barley (cello) and Tony Remy (guitar). Mixing It presenters Mark Russell and Robert Sandall talk to some of the musicians involved in the project, which was recorded at London 's Hackney Empire on 16 th February. The whole event, including DJ sets by Cameo and Semtex, will be broadcast on 1Xtra, on 18 th February.

Charles Hazlewood, conductor of the BBC CO, said:
"I think that it is going to work fantastically well...we will be more rigorous rather than less, we will take more risks rather than less. We will find ways of creating meaning between these acoustical instruments which are hundreds of years old together with some of the most vibrant music of today...my hope...is to find a completely new synergy between what seems to be very disparate forms of music. I think we'll have a blast."

Grime producer DaVinChe said:
"We've come to the orchestra with music on their level...but with our style so they respect it. It's a different experience, but it's a heavy experience. One of a kind."

Roger Wright, Controller of BBC Radio 3 said:
"I'm delighted that BBC Radio 3 is working in this unique partnership with BBC 1Xtra using the BBC Concert Orchestra and breaking down the boundaries between musics. 'Urban Classic' promises to be an exciting evening of new work, to be broadcast on 'Mixing It', a celebrated bastion of experimental music radio. The works featured have been specially commissioned by Radio 3 as part of our ongoing role as the world's largest commissioner of new music."
