The winners of the 2008 British Composer Awards were announced at the Law Society in London on Tues 2 Dec.

The Winners and categories:

Joe Cutler: Folk Music (Chamber)

Michael Zev Gordon: This Night (Choral)

Judith Bingham: Fantasia, from The Lost Works of Paganini (Instrumental Solo or Duo)

Elliott Carter: Three Illusions (International Award)

James MacMillan: 4 Motets From "The Strathclyde Motets" (Liturgical)

John Holland: Green Sky (Making Music Award)

Luke Bedford: Wreathe (Orchestral)

Janek Schaefer: Extended Play (Sonic Art*)

Jonathan Dove: The Adventures of Pinocchio (Stage Works)

Adam Gorb: Adrenaline City (Wind Band or Brass Band)

Howard Skempton: The Moon is Flashing (Vocal)

*Sonic Art Award: A new initiative for 2008, the Sonic Art Award focuses on live electronics, interactive installations and collaborative multi-media performance.

To mark this innovation, the Awards ceremony included an interactive work by Eugene Perera and Mick Grierson, as part of collaboration for the awards between the academy and the Sonic Arts Network.
