Joan as Policewoman is the project of New Yorker Joan Wasser, who has played 5-string viola for the likes of Antony and the Johnsons (indeed, Antony joins her on this track) and Rufus Wainwright.

Nalle: Sunne Song (4.33)
Nalle (which is Finnish for ‘Teddy Bear’) are Hanne Tuulikki (voice/guitar/kantele/flute/straw/percussion/shruti box/jews harp), Chris Hladowski (bouzouki/oud/guitar/clarinet/voice/percussion) and Aby Amorel Vulliamy (viola/voice). They are also all members of the Scottish folk collective Scatter, whose version of She Moved Through the Fayre was played on Mixing It last month. This album was recorded by Daniel Padden (The One Ensemble/Volcano the Bear) in Glasgow. Mixing It originally came across the track on a free Pickled Egg Records sampler acquired at this year’s All Tomorrows Parties Festival.

Maja Ratkje is a Norwegian vocalist and sound artist who is also one half of Femail and one quarter of the free improv group Spunk. She was invited recently to come and play at the Bath International Music Festival, which was artistically directed this year by pianist Joanna MacGregor.

Flugelschlag is the Chick Corea and Steve Reich-endorsed piano trio of Gert Wilden jr, Andy Lutter and Ralf Schmid, all playing prepared pianos on this track. The African ambience and choir was recorded by Gert in Senegal, while the pianos were recorded at Bavarian Radio Studio 3, Munich, October 1999. Brass Monkey: Accordidrocca (3.26)
A palindromic composition: that is, it begins with the sound of an accordion ‘breathing’ with the keys and buttons clicking, then the melody comes in before the chaotic middle section where the sound reverses, and the track replays itself backwards.
Brass Monkey is the project of one Tony Kemplen. This is from a collection of instrumentals using musical instruments bought in charity shops, car boot sales and the local ‘Poundland’.
