Is sport the new art form?

Sunday 25 June 2006 17:45-18:30 (Radio 3)

Is sport the new art form?

At this time of year, with all eyes glued to the screen, it's a question that has to be asked.
It used to be said that art was a surrogate for religion in a godless century, but art is a minority activity. For most people, the closest they come to spiritual experience is the act of watching sport. There's not much to separate modern ballet and Olympic gymnastics, or stage musicals and the choreography of soccer and cricket is in many ways as reflective as symphonic music. So, should we revise our preconceptions? Or are we dumbing down beyond endurance by even suggesting that sport contains elements of the eternal and the numinous?

With contributors including Robin Cousins, three-times world free Skating champion, Olympic and European gold medallist, Jude Kelly, Chair of the Arts, Culture and Education Committee at London 2012, Mark Glanville, former football hooligan turned opera singer, now writer , Barry Davies, football commentator and, Justin Cartwright, novelist and sports columnist.
