Norman Lebrecht talks to one of the most prominent pioneers in Early Music.

The conductor, Emmanuelle Haim discusses her progression from harpsichord to vocal coach to conductor.

In 2000 Haim formed her own Baroque music ensemble Le Concert d'Astree, which has gone on to champion rare Handel and Monteverdi operas. As a guest conductor she achieved great acclaim at Glyndebourne with Handel's Rodelinda and later Theodora. Haim talks about her choice to use singers outside the early music field including Natalie Dessay and Rolando Villazon, and her unconventional views about early music performance.

This interview forms part of a series to be broadcast during the Proms season to include Stephen Sondheim, Lang Lang and Peter Sellars.

This programme is available to download for 7 days as a podcast from The Lebrecht Interview homepage.
