7 April 2005

Thursday 7 April 2005 17:00-19:30 (Radio 3)

Peter Holman compares the music of Handel and Pietro Sandoni and looks at the music for the bass-viol (the predecessor of the cello) during the time of Thomas Gainsborough. And Mark Caudle and Lynda Sayce , two members of Peter's group 'The Parley of Instruments', play for us live in the studio.

As the Royal Festival Hall prepares for its organ to be taken away to be repaired, Simon Preston tells us about the history of Ralph Downes' controversial instrument.

And Catherine Bott puts Handel's Continuo Cantatas into their historical context looking at the music of earlier Italian cantata composers.

Duration:

2 hours 30 minutes
