The Radetzky March

Sunday 22 April 2007 20:00-22:00 (Radio 3)

By Joseph Roth.

Adapted by Mike Walker from the English translation of the novel by Michael Hofmann. The story of the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire is told through the men of the Trotta family, three generations of servants loyal to their emperor.

The story starts at the second half of the 19th century when a Trotta saves the life of Franz Joseph on the battlefield, to the beginning of the 20th when world war and old age wipes the Trottas and their Empire from the map, but not the memory, of Europe.
