A Soldier's Tale

Saturday 5 November 2005 14:00-15:00 (Radio 3)

Samuel West and the ensemble Excellent Device join Charles Hazlewood to explore aspects of Stravinsky's dramatic masterpiece, ahead of a complete performance in the Sunday Gala. Composed in the years after the First World War, the Soldier's Tale is a masterpiece of brevity and economy, telling the Faustian story of the soldier returning from war to sell his violin - his soul - to the devil. In this workshop, Charles and his small company perform extracts from the complete work.
