Tomas Luis de Victoria (1548-1611)

The Young Jesuit

Tuesday 1 July 2008 12:00-13:00 (Radio 3)

Repeated: Tuesday 1 July 2008 20:45-21:45 (Radio 3)

Donald Macleod and Jeremy Summerly explore Victoria's early years when, as a chorister at Avila Cathedral, he cut his teeth as a musician, going on to start his theological education at the local Jesuit School which was endorsed by St Teresa of Avila.

When his voice broke, Victoria travelled to Rome to enrol as an international boarder at the Jesuit Collegium Germanicum. Thus began a rich and varied career in the city spanning 20 years.
