Johannes Brahms (1833 - 1897)

Part Three

Wednesday 9 June 2004 12:00-13:00 (Radio 3)

Repeated: Wednesday 16 June 2004 0:00-1:00 (Radio 3)

After a difficult year when he'd suffered the agonies of falling in love with Clara's daughter Julie, Brahms decided to move to Vienna. He'd been appointed music director of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, the premier Vienna music society, and during the next three years finally completed his first symphony and wrote a number of substantial chamber works.

Donald Macleod introduces the piece triggered by Julie's marriage to someone else, and from happier times, two of Clara's favourite songs which Brahms incorporated into his violin sonata.
