Sibelius: The Path to the Symphony

2. 1894-5

Tuesday 21 September 2004 12:00-13:00 (Radio 3)

Repeated: Tuesday 28 September 2004 0:00-1:00 (Radio 3)

The composer's first operatic project was called The Building of the Boat, but in the early years of the decade it sinks without trace. A piece of choral hack work fills the gap, as do a tone-poem Sibelius suppressed and a part-song he later rewrote twice. Meanwhile a piano sonata proves another dead end.

With Donald Macleod.
