Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886)

3/5. Return to Paris

Wednesday 4 August 2004 12:00-13:00 (Radio 3)

Repeated: Wednesday 11 August 2004 0:00-1:00 (Radio 3)

In the Spring of 1837 Liszt's curiosity was aroused by reports from Paris of the sensational piano playing of Sigismond Thalberg. An exiled Italian Princess Cristina Belgiojoso arranged a charity concert at which an "ivory duel" between the two pianists took place. The event attracted enormous publicity in Paris but in the end it would seem the result was a draw between the celebrity virtuosos. By late summer though, Liszt and his partner Marie d'Agoult had resumed their nomadic life, moving from their friend George Sand's country chateau at Nohant to the Italian lakes and Venice.
