In 1871, the Societe Nationale de Musique was set up to promote the works of young French composers. When by 1910 it had become heavily biased towards the music of the disciples of the composer Cesar Franck, another group, the Societe Musicale Independente was set up in opposition. A few years later, Gabriel Faure found himself in the rather bizarre position of being president of both groups.
