Despite Dohnányi's selfless dedication to the musical welfare of his country, events conspired against him. He ill-advisedly made a decision which was to give his enemies the ammunition they needed to vilify his name, and as a result he was accused of having Nazi sympathies and branded a war criminal.
Donald Macleod introduces the work Dohnányi wrote in the midst of this nightmarish turmoil - his 2nd Symphony.
