Johannes Brahms (1833 - 1897)

Part Two

Tuesday 8 June 2004 12:00-13:00 (Radio 3)

Repeated: Tuesday 15 June 2004 0:00-1:00 (Radio 3)

Brahms returned to his home town of Hamburg - where his reputation as a composer was steadily growing - in 1859, and he threw himself into the city's musical and cultural life. But his ambition to conduct the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra was thwarted, and a job opportunity in Vienna turned out not to be quite what he expected.

Presented by Donald Macleod.
