Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886)

2. Switzerland

Tuesday 3 August 2004 12:00-13:00 (Radio 3)

Repeated: Tuesday 10 August 2004 0:00-1:00 (Radio 3)

Donald Macleod looks at the events surrounding Liszt in 1836. By this time his relationship with Countess Marie d'Agoult, a married lady, had resulted in the birth of a daughter and in order to escape the ensuing scandal the couple eloped to Switzerland away from the eyes of Parisian society. In Basle they were welcomed by an active artistic and intellectual circle of well connected people and the newly founded Geneva Conservatoire provided Liszt with employment.
