Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, born in Jarotchin, near Posen, Germany, has died aged 90. She was one of the very greatest singers of the 20th Century; equally famous for her Strauss and Mozart on the operatic stage as for her Wolf and Schubert on the concert platform.
