New Generation Artists

The Stars of Tomorrow
'As part of its commitment to young artists, BBC Radio 3 launched the New Generation Artists scheme in the autumn of 1999.

13 artists or groups who are beginning to make a mark on the national and international music scene are invited to take part in the scheme, which offers them unique opportunities across the network to develop their considerable talents. These include lunchtime concerts both from London (Monday Lunchtime and New Generations series at Wigmore Hall) and the regions and nations, appearances and recordings with the BBC Orchestras, special studio recordings for Radio 3, and, last but not least, appearances at the Proms.

As part of the scheme Radio 3 has also set up a collaborative venture with EMI Classics, which has so far resulted in nine co-produced CDs in the EMI Debut series, three of which (Belcea Quartet, Simon Trpceski and Jonathan Lemalu) have won Gramophone Awards for the best Debut CD of the year. Radio 3 has also co-produced CDs with Harmonia Mundi involving NGA pianist Cédric Tiberghien, the most recent of which (Brahms and Chopin Ballades) appeared in September 2006; a second CD of Brahms 1st Piano Concerto will appear in the course of 2007. A number of New Generation Artists have also contributed to cover CDs for BBC Music Magazine.

New Generation Artists regularly feature in some of Britain 's most prominent festivals, including the City of London Festival, Aldeburgh Festival, Cheltenham Festival and Edinburgh International Festival.

Radio 3 has also launched a series of commissions in collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Society specially involving New Generation Artists. Composers include Simon Holt, Geoffrey Burgon, Augusta Read Thomas, Karin Rehnqvist and Mark-Anthony Turnage.

The New Generation Artists scheme is generously supported by Aviva. Amongst other things this enables us to add a Jazz New Generation Artist (Gwilym Simcock) to the scheme and to help build a special NGA residency at the 2007 City of London and Cheltenham Festivals.

Each year Radio 3 recruits six new artists to the scheme for a two-year period. The New Generation Artists come from a very wide field, and provide a representative cross-section of the most exciting British and international young artists. These are truly the stars of tomorrow.'
