Martin Helmchen studied for seven years in Berlin with Galina Iwanzowa and, from October 2001, with Arie Vardi at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hanover .

Martin has also received private tuition from Mitsuko Uchida and attended masterclasses with Hans Leygraf, Lev Naumov and Vladimir Ashkenazy.

In October 2001, Martin was awarded a scholarship from the Jütting-Stiftung Stendal and since 2002 has been a supported scholar of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes.

Recent performances include:
This season Martin Helmchen performed with the Royal Flanders Philharmonic, the Radio orchestras of Saarbrücken and Berlin (RSB), the orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin and the Symphony Orchestras of Bonn, Bern, Göttingen, Winterthur and the Bournemouth Symphony. Martin has worked with Philippe Herreweghe, Marek Janowski, Marc Albrecht and Bruno Weil. He has given recitals in Holland, Brussels, Zurich and given further debut recitals in Salzburg and at the Lucerne Festival.

Partnerships and chamber music are key to Martin's musical mission. His close work with the late cellist and pedagogue Boris Pergamenschikow had a considerable impact on this young pianist. In 2006 Martin performed the complete Beethoven sonatas for cello and piano with Heinrich Schiff at Kissinger Sommer, Schleswig Holstein Musik Festival and Schwetzinger Festspiele. Martin's work and recent Sony/BMG recording with the cellist Danjulo Ishizaka won an ECHO prize.

Martin is a regular guest to summer festivals and has appeared at Klavierfestival Ruhr, Lockenhaus Festival and the Marlboro Music Festival in USA. He has also collaborated with Gidon Kremer, Christian Tetzlaff, Christian Poltera, Isabelle Faust, Daniel Hope, Tabea Zimmermann, Mario Brunello, Sharon Kam and Lars Vogt amongst others.

Future plans:
Martin will make his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Gergiev at the 2006 Lucerne Festival. He will also make his debut with the Royal Flanders Philharmonic under Herreweghe and at the Zurich Tonhalle. In December 2006 he will make his solo debut at the Wigmore Hall.
