Born in 1987, Andreas Brantelid is already one of Scandinavia's leading cellists and is quickly establishing an international reputation. He was nominated by the European Concert Hall Organization for their "Rising Star" recital series this season, and is performing in many major venues including the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Musikverein Vienna, Palais des Beaux Arts Brussels, Philharmonie Cologne, Megaron Athens and Stockholm Concert Hall. He is currently a member of the BBC's New Generation Artist scheme and from 2009/10 has been invited to join the prestigious Lincoln Centre Chamber Music Society in New York.
Andreas made his solo debut with orchestra at the age of 14 with the Royal Danish Orchestra, Copenhagen playing the Elgar Cello Concerto. Since then he has appeared as a soloist with all the major orchestras in Scandinavia. This season his performances include Prokofiev Sinfonia Concertante with the Lahti Symphony Orchesta/Saraste and Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No 1 with the Malmo Symphony Orchestra/Sinaisky. In the UK he will play the Elgar Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and next season has concerts with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
He made his debut at the Wigmore Hall in London last season with Swedish pianist Bengt Forsberg with whom he collaborates regularly. He also performs frequently at important festivals including Risør and Bergen in Norway, and Kuhmo in Finland. This season he will also play chamber concerts at the City of London and Cheltenham Festivals in the UK.
In April 2008 EMI released Andreas' debut concerto disc, to great critical acclaim. This recording features the Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations, Schumann Concerto and Saint-Saëns Concerto No. 1 with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Schønwandt.
He is the first Scandinavian to win 1st Prize in the Eurovision Young Musicians Competition (2006) and in the Paulo International Cello Competition (2007). In addition he has won a number of local competitions in Denmark and Sweden. Andreas Brantelid was Danish Radio's "Artist in Residence, 2007". He has received many grants and prizes and is a scholarship holder of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust 2008.
Andreas Brantelid has studied with Henrik Brendstrup, Mats Rondin, Torleif Thedéen and at present with Frans Helmersson at the Kronberg Academy. In addition he has participated in master classes with Pieter Wispelwey, David Geringas and Ralph Kirshbaum. He plays a 1690 Giovanni Grancino cello, generously sponsored by the Augustinus Foundation.
