Janacek in Vienna
Capital of Austria - or, in Janacek's day, the hated Austro-Hungarian Empire which ruled his native Czech lands. Mind you, that didn't stop him being eager for success in the city that's always seen itself as the musical capital of Europe:  in fact, his ardent Czech nationalism probably made him even keener to sock it to the Viennese. He did so, eventually, in 1918, with the triumphant Vienna premiere of his opera Jenufa .
