Janacek Day - 4 July 2004 |
||
Janacek in Velka The village in the region of Slovacko, or Moravian Slovakia, which for Janacek was the nerve centre of Moravian folk music. He first visited as a student and thought he was in paradise (partly thanks to the local plum brandy...) Later he returned to collect folk songs, and Velka gave him the inspiration for his opera Jenufa . It's still a great place for folk music today - some of the most exciting singers and players are in their twenties, and Moravian Slovakia is the only region of Moravia where the musical tradition has been handed down intact from generation to generation since Janacek 's time.
