Janacek Day - 4 July 2004
Janacek in Stramberk
A pretty little town about 10km west of Janacek 's home village of Hukvaldy . In 1927 the local council put up a bust to the composer in their sculpture park dedicated to great Czechs. It might have been the death of him. On August 1st 1928 Janacek went to see the bust, to show it off to Kamila Stasslova the married woman 38 years his junior whom he'd been pursuing (with little success) for over a decade. The bust is up on a hill - you can still see it today, though it's hardly a work of art. Kamila's son Otto, who was with them that day, later said that he reckoned it was over-exertion on this expedition that caused Janacek 's final illness. Local gossips had blamed Otto himself - only 12 at the time - for getting lost in the forest, with Janacek over-exerting himself to track the boy down. Take your pick.
