A week-long season (28 May - 4 June) featuring the BBC Orchestras and BBC Singers to mark the fifteenth anniversary of the death of Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) featuring Bernstein as pianist, conductor, composer, teacher and broadcaster
Season presented by Tommy Pearson with Leonard Bernstein's biographer, Humphrey Burton
Leonard Bernstein died 15 years ago: we believe that this is an appropriate distance in time to re-evaluate his reputation as composer (for Broadway and the concert stage), as conductor, pianist, educationalist and media-man.
The Bernstein Season is hosted by Radio 3's Tommy Pearson, presenter of Stage and Screen, together with Bernstein's biographer, friend and television director/collaborator, Humphrey Burton. The season features all of theBBC performing groups supplemented by two orchestras with which we enjoy close partnerships: the Ulster Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra – itself closely associated with Leonard Bernstein over many years. Radio 3 is the LSO's broadcasting media partner for their Centenary Season, which includes a performance of Bernstein's Mass, to be recorded at the Barbican on June 5th and broadcast on Radio 3 on June 12th.
Different strands of Radio 3's output during the week will have different emphases and concentrate on different elements of Bernstein's genius. You can find full details of these themes, and all the concerts, in these special Bernstein Season web pages.
