BEETHOVEN'S WORKS AT A GLANCE

Nine Symphonies

Particularly well known are the Third ('Eroica'); Fifth; Sixth ('Pastoral') and Ninth ('Choral' which includes 'Ode to Joy').

32 Piano Sonatas

Particularly well known are op.13 ('Pathetique'); op.27'2 ('Moonlight'); op.57 ('Appassionata'); op.106 ('Hammerklavier').
Also lots of variations such as the Diabelli Variations op.120 and bagatelles including WoO.59 'Fur Elise'.

Chamber music

10 Violin Sonatas including op.24 ('Spring') and op.47 ('Kreutzer')

5 Cellos Sonatas andcello pieces, including variations on arias from Mozart and Handel operas

16 string quartets. He composed the 'Grosse Fugue', as a massive finale to the quartet op.130 but had to re-write a more conventional movement. The 'Grosse Fugue' now exists in its own right and has been arranged for string orchestra.

Lots of other pieces of chamber music including piano trios such as op.70'1 ('Ghost') and op.97 ('Archduke'); string trios; a septet, sextets.

Concertos

5 Piano Concertos the Fifth, nicknamed the Emperor is possibly the best known.

One violin concerto and a concerto for violin, cello and piano called the Triple Concerto

    1 opera 'Fidelio' which was originally called 'Leonore'. There are three 'Leonore' Overtures from the different versions of the opera.

    Incidental music to plays - the overtures of these are the best known - for example 'Egmont' and 'Coriolan'.

    Choral music - both sacred and secular. The largest choral work is the 'Missa Solemnis'.

    Songs and also numerous folksong arrangements.
