Hi I'm Melinda Messenger and I used to volunteer in my last year of secondary school. I went to help out at a local old people's home. I only gave a couple of hours a week, it was really minimal time, but it was such a fantastic experience. Just going there at first I remember thinking, why am I doing this, but then you sit down and share a cup of tea with someone or chat to someone who didn't have any visitors, or any family to come and talk to them.

Just to see that smile on their face, and them asking when you were coming again next, and to feel that you'd made a little bit of difference was wonderful, and just so rewarding. It literally takes moments of your time, yet it can really mean so much - so if you've got any time on your hands at all why not think about volunteering. You can help out with your community and I promise you will get back as much if not more than you put in.

I used to do a bit of volunteering when I was younger. I used to visit a boy who was in care. We became good friends and on the weekends we invited him over to our house and went out on trips together.
