The Kinks’ You Really Got Me, David Bowie’s Space Oddity, Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, The Pet Shop Boys’ West End Girls and Robbie Williams’ Angels have been voted the Songs Of The Decades in a BBC Radio 2 vote held to mark the 50th anniversary of the Ivor Novello Awards.

Over the past five weeks, Radio 2’s Ken Bruce (Monday to Friday, 9.30am-12.00noon) has been featuring five songs from five 10 year periods and inviting listeners to vote for their favourite online – at - by text or by post.

Colin Martin, Editor Radio 2 Music says: “When we started our journey to ask the Radio 2 listeners to select their favourite song from five decades of great British hit songs we always thought The Beatles or John Lennon, who between them got the most nominations, would top at least one of the decades. How wrong we were, the listeners have voted and The Beatles are out. The wonderful part of our journey is the arrival and the discovery that great songs like the Kinks - You Really Got Me, Bowie's - Space Oddity and Queen's - Bohemian Rhapsody are regarded as being not just on a par with Messrs Lennon and McCartney but out in front in their contribution and influence to Great British music."

The shortlist of 25 songs have been selected by the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters as the most influential between 1955 and 2004.

2005 is the 50th year of the Ivor Novello Awards for British popular songwriters, composers and music publishers and are internationally respected as Britain’s major platform for recognising its songwriting talents.

The British Academy of Composers & Songwriters is the trade association for all UK music writers. With over 2,500 members, the Academy provides support, advice and a voice for both emerging and established writers across all genres of music.

The Academy also presents the annual Ivor Novello Awards. The 50th Ivor Novello Awards take place in London on Thursday 26th May.
