showing his delight at cutting a quality single back in Memphis after years of recording mostly soundtrack filler. By 1969 he had been without a US number one for seven years, but together with his album From Elvis In Memphis, this marked a return to form as he finally updated his sound to reflect the changing musical landscape. “Suspicious Minds” has a definite soul feel to it, with the Stax-like chorus alternating with the slow-burning verses in which Elvis pleads with his lover not to let distrust destroy their relationship.
