Merry Xmas Everybody
Anyone old enough to remember the Christmas of 1973, will have fond memories of perhaps opening up their Chopper Bike or Mastermind game to the song that has been seasonal favourite ever since. As is the case now,

most Christmas releases have to be planned months in advance, and Slade's schedule in 1973 was no exception.
During Slade's summer tour of the East Coast of the USA, the band stopped off in New York and booked some studio time at the Record Plant, the legendary recording studio where Jimi Hendrix, The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac had laid down tracks.

Noddy Holder explains below: - "It was a steaming hot day. To get the sound we wanted we did some recording from the corridor and we were singing 'Merry Xmas Everybody' in the middle of a sweltering summer. The Americans hanging about were staring at us and thinking 'Mad must have seemed pretty stupid to them".

Jimmy Lea remembers being in awe of recording the song at such a famous studio. "John Lennon was doing his 'Mind Games' album there at the same time, so I was using the same piano that Lennon was an odd feeling".

Just to prove that the inspiration for a good song can come at any time, Jimmy can thank his daily ablutions for his most fondly-remembered song. The tune for 'Merry Xmas Everybody' came to me in a shower in Memphis" he states. "I wrote the verse and put it to an old song of Noddy's called 'Buy Me A Rocking Chair' that he wrote in 1967".

In December of that year, the song became the third Slade single to go straight in at number one in the UK chart, with an advanced order of well over 300,000, and has gone on to become their biggest seller with sales topping a million, and that's just the UK market.
