
Today is World Freedom Day, marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
It was on this day in 1989, that the East German politburo decided to allow East German refugees to exit directly through crossing points to West Germany to ease the complications caused by a wave of refugees leaving through Czechoslovakia.
Checkpoints along the 96-mile concrete barrier around West Berlin were immediately inundated with East Berliners.
