Hubert Gregg, an actor, director, author, writer of words and music, broadcaster and a stage performer,presented Thanks For The Memory on Radio 2 from 1972 - 2004.
As an actor, Hubert's stage appearances included French Without Tears, While The Sun Shines, Off The Record and the musical play Chrysanthemum. He appeared in two seasons at the Chichester Festival Theatre as Britannus to John Gielgud's Caesar, in Shaw's Caesar And Cleopatra, and in the record-breaking tour of The Secretary Bird. On screen he was Prince John in Robin Hood, Mr Archer in Doctor At Sea (for which he also wrote the music), and Mr Pusey in the classic Ealing comedy The Maggie (called High And Dry in America).
As a director, Hubert was responsible, in London, for Agatha Christie's first theatre success, The Hollow, which ran for more than a year at the Fortune and Ambassador's. He also re-staged the long-running comedies To Dorothy, A Son at the Garrick and The Secretary Bird at the Savoy.
Hubertwrote two novels: April Gentlemen, published in 1951, and A Day's Loving. In 1939, he wrote the words and music of his first song I'm Going To Get Lit Up When The Lights Go Up In London, which became a wartime hit.He went on to write more than a hundred songs. One of them - Maybe It's Because I'm A Londoner - has become the standard folk song of his native city.
Hubert died on Monday 29 March 2004.
