New Year's Day, 1964, saw the launch of one of British broadcasting's most enduring offerings. Top of The Pops was launched by BBC bosses as a sop to the growing youth interest in modern music but it grew to be the iconic music show of the 70s, 80s and 90s.
In this programme Noddy Holder - a TOTP regular himself - finds out what made the programme so popular and talks to many of its contributors, on and off the screen. Interviewees include Sir Jimmy Savile, Pans People choreographer Flick Colby, Tony Blackburn, Pete Murray and Jools Holland. Also included is archive interviews from the late John Peel, a reluctant presenter, and contributions from Radio 2's Janice Long.
For the band's appearing on Top Of The Pops it gave them the credibility and national audience they craved. Simon Le Bon recalls Duran Duran's appearance on the programme reconciled him with his father:
"Up until we did our first 'Top of The Pops' my dad had completely ceased any communication with me since he found out I joined a band, ……the following day was the first time I spoke to him since I joined Duran Duran and he said well I guess you're doing all right then Simon aren't you…"
We also hear from Paul Weller, Bananarama, Allan Clarke from the Hollies, Ronan Keating, Lulu and Jarvis Cocker talking about their Top of The Pops memories. |
