 | It says a lot about the late Joe Strummer that his last gig was a performance in support of the striking firefighters...
...his death shortly afterwards at the age of 50 on December 22nd 2003 robbed the music world of one of its great heroes, politically committed and iconoclastic to the last.
The Clash, along with the Sex Pistols, defined British punk rock. They inspired a generation, allying trenchant political comment with some of the most incendiary music ever committed to vinyl.
Mark Lamarr presents a special tribute programme, featuring contributions from friends, fellow musicians and fans, including Strummer's former bandmates Mick Jones and Paul Simonon.
The programme also features Billy Bragg, Sex Pistol Glen Matlock, long time friend Keith Allen and filmmaker Don Letts, as well as Terry Woods of The Pogues, who Strummer briefly joined as singer.
In addition, Strummer features in his own words through a wealth of archive material. And of course there's plenty of great music, from the early days of the Clash right up to Joe's final project, the roots rock Mescaleros.
