Paul Gambaccini tells the story of one of the key sixties soul groups - the legendary The Four Tops, featuring brand new interviews with the likes of the Tops' Duke and Obie, songwriters Brian and Eddie Holland, and Supreme Mary Wilson.
The series is delivered in four top parts beginning with the tale of their formation in Detroit, their many and varied attempts to break through over nearly a decade, their assorted flop records, and their decision to sign with Motown Records.
Having signed to Motown, after nearly a year, their first recordings were rejected. But their connection to songwriters Holland-Dozier-Holland in 1964 finally broke through in a big way - and they were soon an international success, not least here in the UK.
In the sixties the band had huge success at Motown delivering endless hits, continuing to develop and recording with The Supremes. But come the early-seventies, they were faced with a key decision.
The final episode sees the Tops leave Motown, fade out of fashion and then gloriously back in and sign once more to Motown.
