Enigmatic and innovative, New Order have emerged as one of Britain's most influential and acclaimed bands. Emerging from the ashes of Manchester legends Joy Division, they merged dance music with rock, recorded the biggest selling 12 inch single in history and released a string of groundbreaking albums.
MARK RADCLIFFE presents a two-part profile of the Manchester mavericks, featuring exclusive new interviews with the band, archive material and rare performances from the BBC vaults.
Programme One
In the first programme the band talk about how they regrouped after
Joy Division - following the suicide of 26 year-old singer Ian Curtis, and how they radically mixed the genres to come up with seminal recordings like
Blue Monday, Temptation, and the classic album Power Corruption and Lies.
Programme Two
The final episode concludes the story. With the help of Keith Allen and the England football squad, the band hit the number one spot with World in Motion, and fused art, 'Electronica', dance and rock for the classic single,
True Faith.
The programme also follows the band as they run wild in Ibiza while creating the acid house touchstone album Technique, kicking off the two-year party that became known as "Madchester". It also looks at their troubled 90s years, which periodically erupted to produce influential rock and pop albums like Republic and their most recent release, Get Ready.
The programme features contributions from ambient superstar Moby, Pet Shop Boys and Electronic frontman Neil Tennant, Factory Records boss Tony Wilson, footballer John Barnes, actor Keith Allen, dance guru Arthur Baker, and critics including Paul Morley and Miranda Sawyer.
COMPETITION
