The 20 Best Disco Records
Disco was one of the greatest musical movements of the 1970s. In the days before Saturday Night Fever effectively turned it into self-parody, disco was a genuine underground revolution. Emerging from roots on the New York gay club scene, it was responsible for some of the best, and sexiest, dance music ever made.

In this six-part series, NORMAN JAY takes a wry look at the Disco years - from its early 70s origins in New York's deepest underground (and the rigor of the Latin Hustle) to its wildest excesses and legendary, Studio 54-style glamour and extravagance; from its musical roots in Philly soul to the electronic revolution brought in by Eurodisco. It examines Disco's meteoric rise and spectacular fall from grace (the public burning of Disco records) and finally its rebirth as House music - 'Disco's revenge'.

Throughout it features some of the finest dance music ever recorded - not only the classics, but the real underground Disco which took dancers to new states of Saturday night euphoria.

Disco relied on phenomenal musicianship and state of the art production. It transformed the way music was recorded and the way radio worked. It also turned around the fortunes of club culture overnight. It was responsible for the remix, the 12" single and the rise of the DJ as storyteller, producer and superstar. It took on the rock establishment and held its own. It changed lifestyles, fashions and attitudes, forging a rainbow politics where for the very first time - gay or straight, black or white, male or female - everyone was invited to the party. Most of all it shaped the course of pop and dance music forever.

Contributors include: Frankie Knuckles, Nile Rodgers, Gloria Gaynor, Jazzy B, Norman Jay, Sister Sledge, Jellybean, Joycelyn Brown, David Mancuso, Kurt Loder, Craig David, Robin Gibb, Francios Kevorkian, Nicky Siano and Danny Krivit.
