In a one-off edition of Ball Over Broadway, Michael Ball returns to New York for a special programme to mark the arrival of The Country Music Association Awards in The Big Apple. Find out all about the awards with BBC Music's CMA 2005 website.
Broadway and country music have a surprising amount in common. Country artists have starred on Broadway since the days of the Ziegfeld Follies, while country themes have featured in Broadway musicals from Oklahoma! to the present day.
In this special programme, Michael tells the story of the close relationship that has long existed between Broadway and country music. Michael talks to leading country artists such as Reba McEntire, Pam Tillis, John Cullum, Tom Wopat and Larry Gatlin about starring on Broadway. He also explores the way these giants of American entertainment have influenced each other, from the days of Oklahoma! and Annie Get Your Gun to The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and The Will Rogers Follies. Making his usual inimitable contribution is critic Clive Barnes, plus Broadway musical composer Mark York.
With the music of Rodgers & Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, Cy Coleman and many more, this programme casts a fascinating light on the unexpectedly fruitful relationship between Broadway and country.
