Actress Sue Johnston explores the history and impact of the song You'll Never Walk Alone, a Broadway show tune that has become synonymous with the city of Liverpool.
The song has been recorded by such diverse stars as Frank Sinatra, Placido Domingo and Pink Floyd, but it was the 1963 version by Gerry and The Pacemakers that became both bound to Liverpool life and an international anthem.
It was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for their 1945 musical, Carousel, and we hear from original cast member Christine Johnson, who was the first to sing the song.
In this special programme, which forms part of BBC Radio 2's Liverpool Season, Sue considers the song's enduring appeal and talks to Gerry Marsden, Ian Broudie, Ian McCulloch and Alex Krapanos, as well as others who have been directly touched by You'll Never Walk Alone.
