Michael Ball Meets Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber

Friday 21 March
1903 - 1930

Radio 2's new Sunday morning presenter Michael Ball joins Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber for a fascinating chat about the life and extraordinary times of Lionel Bart.

Bart was the East End boy made good, a composer and lyricist who graduated from writing student reviews, to best-selling pop songs, to world beating musicals, in a meteoric rise to fame during the 50s and 60s.

His hits included the pop songs Livin' Doll and A Handful of Songs and the shows Lock Up Your Daughters and the multi-award winning musical Oliver!

Michael and Lord Webber discuss how and why Bart sold the rights to this masterwork, and descended into an alcohol and drug-fuelled obscurity that lasted for over a decade, and how he was restored to fame by a building-society commercial.
